Prep Time: 15 minutes minutes
Cook Time: 12 minutes minutes
Total Time: 27 minutes minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons oil I use coconut or olive oil
  • 1 1/4 cups flour - plus additional flour for rolling dough Use whatever flour your cat can have – I used oat
  • 1 tablespoon dried catnip optional
  • 3/4 cup finely shredded carrot
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • cold water as needed

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In medium bowl add oil and mix in 1 cup of the flour until mixture looks sandy.
  • Stir in catnip and carrots.
  • Mix in egg. Add a little water if the mixture looks too dry and isn't holding together. Add a little flour if the mixture looks too wet and sticky. (Sometimes the carrots can be more wet or dry.)
  • Sprinkle flat surface with a little additional flour and roll or pat out dough to ¼ inch thickness. Sprinkle dough with additional flour as needed.
  • Prick dough all over with a fork. Use pizza wheel to cut dough into 1/2 inch squares.
  • Arrange squares on prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for about 12 minutes or until starting to brown. (Bake longer for drier texture.)
  • Cool on baking sheet.
  • Store in airtight container for several days or freeze for longer storage. (If baked to a softer texture store in refrigerator.)

      Hello Unicorn!

It depends … how chewy/dry they’re baked, humidity, etc.. Usually a couple days.

I’m making these for my kitty, KitKat, tonight. He is a bit finicky with what I feed him and he doesn’t have teeth. What amount of time should I bake them at to make them softer? I can’t have them irritating his gums, after all.

Yes you could… Search the Web ”Replacing Eggs by Flax Seeds”

I think 1 EGG = 1 tablespoon of ground Flax Seeds mixed with 3 tablespoons of water.

Hi Reiley – It depends a little on how thick and large you make them. I’d let them cook just a couple extra minutes and check them. Then you can repeat as needed. They will firm up a bit more during the cooling process.

Hi Annie – Depends upon how large and thin/thick you make them – My batch made over 100, but they were about 1/2 inch squares. I recommend freezing and just keeping what you need for a few days in the refrigerator. Hope that helps! Take care!

I think it’s irresponsible to berate someone for something when you aren’t even educated enough on the subject at hand to do so. I would suggest you take her suggestion to speak with your vet so you Can have solid facts that the ingredients in her recipe isn’t safe for cat consumption and then post a comment. You completely outta pocket bruhh…

Hi Amanda – I haven’t done so myself – so I can’t say 100%. but I think if you baked them until they were crunchy, they would be fine. It’s usually when there’s moisture, that they mold more quickly. Take care!

The treats were easy to make but the cats refused them. I took them to the shelter. Even those lost souls refused. After a few days they grew what looked like furry mold. Should I leave them out to dry or bake longer?

Hi Marianne – Sorry your cats weren’t interested – cats can be more finicky with treats for sure! You can bake them to whatever texture you prefer. If you want to store at room temp. I would dry them out more. There aren’t any preservatives, so I would recommend freezing for longer storage – just take out a few as needed. They thaw very quickly.

This recipe is incredible! Thank you so much for this! We have one cat with chicken, beef and dairy allergies so it’s I’ve never been able to find store-bought treats that are suitable for her. I’ve tried numerous recipes for treats in the past, all of which she has ignored. Completely different story with these treats! All three of our cats have gone crazy for them (and, word of warning to anyone planning to make these, it’s quite difficult to make these with your cats in the room – they lose their heads as soon as the cat nip packet comes out and want to be in the bowl when you’re stirring the ingredients!).

Thank you, once again, for this recipe! Our little girl no longer needs to feel left out when the other cats get treats!

How dense are you, really??? Of course cats can contract salmonella from eggs-as can dogs and humans(just so you know-in case you ever happen to make another recipe for yourself fron some other site!) I mean honestly! It’s not as if she is trying to kill your cat with eggs for crying out loud! Here’s a suggestion-just go buy cat treats instead, or maybe try cooking the ones you make for your cat enough to kill the salmonella. OH YEAH-might want to avoid lettuce, chicken, turtles and tortoises -they are all known to carry salmonella from time-to-time.

Will for sure give these a fighting chance since my cat`s named Goofy and acts like a goofy most of the time. He`s also a picky eater.
I look at it as something new to try with our pet/pets. However, I would like to apologize for the negative remarks that are fired back at ya.
I didn`t see anywhere that you or someone else twisted their arms to make your r you mention to check with the vet before trying these.
    Trial and Error.
I wish everyone and their pets a good day.

I just wanted to say keep up the good work, and thanks for posting a meat-free recipe for cats that includes catnip. It’s creative and keeps things interesting for them. I think a cool substitute might be dried silvervine, too, for felines that don’t react to catnip. Anyway, this looks like a great recipe, and I’m going to try it with my cats.
